Chess endgames: Convert small advantages

1. Activate the king

With fewer mating threats, the king should enter the center, attack pawns, and support promotion. A king that arrives first can gain several tempi.

• After queens are exchanged, consider centralizing the king.
• Place the king in front of an enemy passed pawn.
• Check whether enemy rook checks can block the route.

2. Opposition and key squares

Opposition describes kings facing each other with one square between them, using the move order to gain access. It decides whether a king can reach key squares in pawn endings.

• Direct and distant opposition both matter.
• The side to move can change the result of the same placement.

3. Passed pawns and pawn races

A passed pawn has no opposing pawn ahead on its file or neighboring files. Its promotion threat ties pieces down, but support from king or rook often matters more than immediate advance.

• Count every move to promotion in a pawn race.
• Check whether promotion comes with check.
• A distant passer can distract the enemy king.

4. Keep the rook active

Rooks often belong behind passed pawns. Cutting the enemy king off along a file or rank frees your king. A passive rook may fail to convert even an extra pawn.

• Maintain checking distance from the side or rear.
• Find a way to avoid tying the rook in front of a pawn.
• Compare a king cutoff with material gain.

5. Essential basic mates

Queen-and-king and rook-and-king mate are required to turn an advantage into a win. Reduce space, approach with the king, and finish with a protected check.

• Do not leave the major piece unprotected next to the king.
• Avoid stalemate by preserving a legal move before the final check.
